Synology High Availability Wizard
This wizard guides you through the process of creating and setting up high-availability clusters.
To launch this wizard:
- Open Synology High Availability.
- Go to the Overview page.
- Click Create HA cluster.
To set up the passive server:
Please designate a Synology server to be the passive server. Under normal conditions, the passive server does not provide services. However, in the event of a malfunction, services can be transferred from the active server to the passive server.
- IP address: Please enter the passive server IP address.
- Username: Provide a user account belonging to the administrator group on the destination server.
- Password: Provide the password for the account belonging to the administrator group.
Note:
- Please complete the high-availability cluster setup wizard within the given time limit. If you exceed this time limit, you will have to start the setup process over again.
- If you need to identify which server is the active server of a high-availability cluster, we recommend you download Synology's DS Finder application and use its beep function, which can make the active server emit a short beep sound.
To configure the heartbeat connection:
This connection facilitates data replication from the active server to the passive server. When the high-availability cluster is created, files from the active server are transferred to the passive server through this connection in order to maintain consistency. The servers also use this connection to deliver system messages and confirm status of the other server.
- HA Connection (Heartbeat) Interface: Choose an available network interface on the current server to facilitate data replication.
Note:
- The heartbeat connection cable must be a network cable directly connecting the active server and the passive server.
- The network interfaces used on the active server and the passive server must be identical. For instance, if the cable is plugged into the LAN 1 LAN port on the active server, it must also be plugged into the LAN 1 LAN port on the passive server.
To configure the network interface settings of the high-availability cluster:
The high-availability cluster will use a high-availability cluster IP address as its connection interface to the outside. You can connect using this high-availability cluster IP address when you wish to use DSM services regardless of which Synology server is the active server. This prevents from having to connect to different IP addresses after performing a switchover from the active server to the passive server.
- Cluster Server Name: The name of the high-availability cluster. Please refer to server naming rules for information regarding name restrictions.
- Network Interface: The network interface to be used by the high-availability cluster. You must choose a different LAN port from the one designated for data-replication in the previous step.
- IP Address: The IP address to be used by the high-availability cluster. Regardless of which server is actively providing services, the cluster can be connected to via this IP.
- Subnet Mask: The subnet mask to be used by the high-availability cluster.
To confirm settings:
Please double-check the settings to be used by the high-availability cluster. The system will begin binding the high-availability cluster together once you click Apply.
Note:
- Heartbeat connection settings will produce two sets of IP addresses for the purposes of data replication from the active server to passive server. Please make sure that these two IP addresses are not used by any other equipment in the network.
- Once the high-availability cluster is connected, all data on the passive server will be deleted. Please make sure that no important data is stored on the passive server.
